About me

I'm a British freelance shooting PD / development producer working primarily on factual and factual entertainment programmes for broadcasters like Discovery, BBC, National Geographic, History, Sky and C4.

I've worked as single man unit, but I've also led a crew of 40 and directed multiple cameras on location. My experience ranges widely from short VT packages to hour long observational documentaries in the Arctic, corporates, 'commercials quality' sequences shot on 5D, to presenter led shows, VO led 'Nat Geo' epics and high risk physical SFX, like this rocket down a railway

I've been in industry for over a decade, specializing in popular science and engineering, but I'm very willing to work across all factual content. Recent credits include a feature length documentary on Paralympians (C4), Bang Goes The Theory (BBC1) and Scrapheap Challenge (C4).

As a development producer I've spotted ideas, talent and researched and written treatments for Discovery, National Geographic, C4, BBC, Five and many other broadcasters. Several of these have won additional funding  or commissions. I'm used to taking a show from one liner to sizzle tape or full pilot. Feel free to ask for examples of my writing.

Increasingly PD's are expected to shoot, so it's handy I started in the industry as a camera operator. Experience with Sony F800 XDXAM, EX3 (often with Nanoflash), Panasonic's P2 and HDX900, Canon XF305, 5D and C300. I'm also happy rigging minicams, working with high speed (Phantom and Miro) and have some experience with specialist science cameras like Flir. I can also look after basic sound and lighting - I promise you a decent sequence for the edit, not hosed footage!

You can't do everything (despite what some budgets imply), so I've got an incredible contacts book full of cheap explosions, dedicated PC's, talented engineers, brilliant camera ops, 3D TV boffins, free excavators, artistic prop makers, historians, genius editors, FMRI medical imaging experts, cheap casting agents, steam train owners, military test tanks, rich gentleman farmers, eager researchers and everything in between.

I can build an entire production team, consult on your Discovery development, or just solve an urgent question. Feel free to ask and I'll do what I can to help you out. In my spare time I'm an avid nonfiction reader, particularly interested in the industrial revolution, the Middle East, military history and foreign affairs. Other interests include cooking, photography and a money pit V8 Land Rover.
